Muslim Brotherhood official to NBC News: We are 'willing to die' for democracy

Asmaa Waguih / Reuters

Supporters of deposed Egyptian President Mohammed Morsi chant slogans during a rally on Thursday.

By Henry Austin, NBC News contributor

A senior Muslim Brotherhood official has warned that supporters of toppled Egyptian President Mohammed Morsi are "willing to die" for their cause ahead of nationwide protests scheduled for Friday.

Gehad El-Haddad, an adviser and spokesman for the Islamist group, said the Brotherhood was determined to reverse the military overthrow of Egypt?s first democratically elected president.

?We have our own belief in the democratic system and we are willing to die for it,? El-Haddad told NBC News, urging millions to take to the streets in cities across the country on Friday. ?We might end up on the streets facing military bullets tearing through our flesh but the Egyptian people will face a 60-year cycle of a new military dictatorship that will rob their freedom with short-term promises.

Amr Abdallah Dalsh / Reuters

A member of the Muslim Brotherhood reads the Quran early Friday.

?Our children will suffer the consequences, not us. The military has to be pushed back into the barracks or the only alternative is killing.?

The Muslim Brotherhood, and allies grouped in what it calls the National Alliance for Legitimacy, urged the nationwide rallies on Friday.

"To every free Egyptian man and woman: Come out against the bloody military coup," the alliance said in a statement.

El-Haddad insisted that reinstating democracy was the heart of the Brotherhood's protests.?

?It?s not about Morsi anymore,? he said.??The people had a set of choices and they voted.?I accept that President Morsi wasn?t doing a very good job but the president of France hasn?t been doing a very good job, but they don?t take him down with the army.

"[President George W.] Bush was doing the worst [job] in the world, but Congress didn?t take him down. They needed votes to do that. They needed the democratic system.?

El-Haddad conceded that Morsi, whose whereabouts remain unclear, had made mistakes during his 12 months in office. He was elected to a four-year term following the revolution which ousted autocratic Hosni Mubarak in 2011.

?We are trying to build a democracy in a country that never had one, literally since the time of the pharaohs," he said. "At the end of the day we are all amateurs on that scene. There was no political life in Egypt before.?

At least 99 people have died in violence since Morsi's downfall, more than half of them when troops fired on Islamist protesters outside a Cairo barracks on July 8.

Hussein Malla / AP

Days of massive protests and a military ultimatum forced the country's first democratically elected president from office.

El-Haddad insisted that the Brotherhood would "not resort to violence."?

Meanwhile, Egypt's interim President Adli Mansour promised on Thursday to fight those driving the nation towards "chaos."

In his first public address since he was sworn in on July 4, Mansour pledged to restore stability and security.

"Some want a bloody path," he said in a televised address. "We will fight a battle for security until the end."

U.S. aid to Egypt was formally put under review last week in the wake of the military-backed power shift.?U.S. law requires that aid be cut off to a country that undergoes a military coup, but Western leaders have stopped short of declaring the July 3 transition a coup.

More versatile approach to creating stem cells discovered

[unable to retrieve full-text content]Stem cells are key to the promise of regenerative medicine: the repair or replacement of injured tissues with custom grown substitutes. Essential to this process are induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs), which can be created from a patient's own tissues, thus eliminating the risk of immune rejection. However, Shinya Yamanaka's formula for iPSCs, for which he was awarded last year's Nobel Prize, uses a strict recipe that allows for limited variations in human cells, restricting their full potential for clinical application.

Some people feel that any type of home improvement task is difficult, but you will only feel this way if you don?t have the right information and skills to help you. Home improvements are easy if you know how. This article can help with your new home improvement projects.

A good tip for home improvement is to personalize any project you undertake. You will enjoy your home through personal panache.

You can add storage by simply recycling old shoe boxes. Use scraps of attractive fabric or old wallpaper to cover the shoe boxes. This way you get an extra storage solution while adding drama to a room.

Small rooms can look dark and dull, but they do not have to stay this way. Get more light into these rooms. A room tends to look bigger with a little natural light. Your tiny room will seem all that tiny anymore.

TIP! If you are running out of counter space in your kitchen, consider an over-the-range microwave. Microwaves that replace the range hood come in different prices, and some of them have special features, like convection cooking.

Paint stripes on your old walls prior to installing paneling! Regardless of how much care and caution you use when putting up paneling, there is usually a spot where the wall shows through. To cut down on that, measure off the areas in which the panels will join before your do the installation.

Give the bubble in your old vinyl flooring a shot! This flattens the bubble flat. Purchase glue that fills a syringe to complete your project.

Use clear totes to organize your garage by type and frequency of use. Label the boxes and ensure they?re stackable. This is a great way to clean your garage and keep pests out of your items.

Soundproofing your interior walls can be a good investment. It would be quite luxurious to soundproof your entire home; however, but there are areas that you could concentrate on. The important rooms to soundproof are bathrooms, bathrooms and equipment rooms. You can also soundproof your kitchen since its not open to a lot of other areas.

Face off: Nokia Lumia 1020 vs Samsung Galaxy S4

Nokia?s Lumia 1020 brings the world?s best smartphone camera to market soon, but will that be enough to depose the Samsung Galaxy S4 ? the best-selling Android phone in history?

We've gone hands-on with the Lumia 1020 and have been using the S4 for months ? so which one comes out on top? Let's find out.

Camera King
Let?s address this straightaway: the Nokia Lumia 1020 has a better camera than the Samsung Galaxy S4. Although we've only had a quick go on the 1020 and have used the S4 for months, it's immediately obvious that Nokia?s 41MP snapper is in another league. Giant wall-sized prints of its shots were at the launch event, and even up close they were clear, well defined and richly coloured. As well as that whopping megapixel count, the Lumia's optical image stablisation and xenon flash should make for great low-light shots and steady video ? while the ability to zoom out after you?ve taken a picture is a piece of astoundingly useful tech voodoo.

nokia lumia 1020 cameraIt should be noted that as an Android phone, the Galaxy S4 does have Instagram ? but with Windows Phone app Hipstamatic now able to upload pics to Instagram, the Lumia is on a pretty even footing for filter fans.

Hardware
samsung galaxy s4 powerSammy?s flagship Galaxy S4 is as a fast device with its 2GB RAM and mighty 1.9GHz quad-core Snapdragon processor. The Nokia Lumia 1020 has the most RAM of any Windows Phone at 2GB, but a relatively meagre dual-core 1.5GHz processor. So on paper the S4 wins. Although in use we found no lag on the Lumia ? and after all, that's the main thing. In fact the energy-frugal dual-core may prove to be a battery advantage for the Nokia ? we'll find out in our full review.

Super screen
nokia lumia 1020 screenThere?s no denying that Samsung has screen manufacturing down to a fine art. The S4 packs a whopping 1080p resolution into that beautiful 5in Super AMOLED, providing a stunningly crisp 441ppi. How could Nokia ever compete? Its "near surface" screen does a good job. Sure, its 4.5in display 'only' manages 334ppi with its 768x1280 resolution, but with PureMotion HD+, it's clear in sunlight and touch works with gloves on. Overall, though, the bigger size and higher pixel count of the S4's display tips the balance in its favour.

Build quality
For a flagship phone, the Galaxy S4's body still feels a bit too plasticky ? although its Gorilla Glass 3 screen is plenty strong enough to survive a few knocks and bumps. And that flimsy back panel does mean you can swap out the battery if it's running low on juice.

nokia lumia 1020 buildThe Lumia 1020 is a seriously well engineered piece of kit with its solid polycarbonate shell. Despite cramming in the six-lens optics for its 41MP camera, it's still remarkably slim. A shame, though, that it doesn't feature the lustrous metal edges found on the Lumia 925 ? that would be the icing on the cake.

Battery life
samsung galaxy s4 batteryThe S4 has a huge 2600mAh battery compared to the 1020?s 2000mAh juice pack. That translates to on-paper 3G talk time of 17 hours for the S4 and 13.3 hours on the Lumia. But the Nokia manages 63 hours of music playback while the S4 can handle 62. Taking into account the extra burden placed on the S4's battery by that bigger screen and processor, it looks like the 1020 stands a chance in this race. Plus the Lumia's optional camera grip case offers a futher 1000mAh battery to boost performance. We?ll have to wait and see what our 1020 review reveals.

Extras
nokia lumia 1020 gripThe S4 offers 16GB, 32GB or 64GB options with microSD expansion. The Lumia 1020 comes with 32GB and that?s it ? not ideal for something made to shoot huge 41MP photos. Samsung wins here ? and features all the same connectivity options as the Lumia, plus Bluetooth 4.0 rather than the Lumia?s 3.0, and an IR port. But the 1020 does offer an extra grip case that makes taking photos easier and adds an extra 1000mAh battery and a tripod mount.

VERDICT
Although Google Play still offers a vastly wider array of apps, the Lumia 1020's awesome camera skills and solid build should tempt plenty of the Android faithful to make the jump to Windows Phone.

Shares, euro steady ahead of data, Bernanke

By Marc Jones

LONDON (Reuters) - European markets traded in narrow ranges early on Tuesday as investors shied away from major moves ahead of inflation and German confidence data and awaited further clues on U.S. monetary stimulus.

The broad FTSEurofirst 300 <.fteu3> share index inched up 0.1 percent and the euro was firm at $1.3070.

Markets readied for UK and euro zone inflation figures at 0830 and 0900 GMT and what is expected to be a third straight improvement in the ZEW German sentiment indicator at 0900 GMT.

Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke's twice-yearly monetary policy report to Congress on Wednesday and Thursday was set to offer more clues on the U.S. central bank's policy as it looks to wind down its stimulus program. "The recent mixed data shows how difficult it is for the Fed, and also consequently for the markets, to read when the first tapering will be." said Rabobank economist Philip Marey.

"If he (Bernanke) seems more or less satisfied with how things are going then that would be taken as an indication that we are going to see something in September."

Benchmark German government bond yields tracked a tick-up in U.S. Treasuries overnight, while euro zone periphery debt, with the exception of Greece, made minor gains.

In Asian trading, Japan's Nikkei <.n225> added 0.64 percent after Citigroup's strong earnings had helped the S&P 500 <.spx> end higher for an eighth day.

Further south, the Australian dollar surged half a U.S. cent after minutes from this month's Reserve Bank of Australia meeting gave little hint of a near-term rate cut.

Commodity markets were mixed after Chinese data on Monday.

Former Google, Twitter Execs Launch ?Homebrew? Venture Firm

By Amir Efrati

Two well-known Silicon Valley Web executives have launched a venture capital firm to finance and advise early-stage technology companies, yet another sign of the growing appetite of investors to place bets on younger startups.

It took former?Twitter?executive Satya Patel, 38 years old, and longtime former?Google?and?YouTube?executive Hunter Walk, 39, just four months to raise a $35 million fund?largely from a university endowment, a foundation and two other institutional investors.

Their firm, called Homebrew (an homage to a computer hobbyist group that formed in Silicon Valley in the 1970s), won?t just write checks. As former product executives, Messrs. Patel and Walk say they plan to take an active role in their portfolio companies, helping to shape their products and organizations in what venture capitalists call the ?seed? stage.

Wall St. gains after Citigroup; S&P 500 up for eighth day

By Caroline Valetkevitch

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Stocks edged up on Monday, putting the S&P 500 on track for an eighth day of gains, as upbeat results from Citigroup offset mixed U.S. economic data.

Shares of Citigroup shot up 1.9 percent to $51.80 after the third-largest U.S. bank by assets reported a 26 percent increase in adjusted quarterly profit. The S&P 500 financial industry sector index <.spsy> was up 0.4 percent.

Leap Wireless International Inc shares more than doubled after AT&T Inc said on Friday it would buy the company for $1.19 billion and at least two brokerages raised their ratings on Leap's stock. Leap, which was the Nasdaq's most-active stock, was trading at $17.10 - up 114.3 percent.

The day's economic data sent mixed signals, with growth in New York state manufacturing for July accelerating, while June retail sales fell short of expectations. May business inventories barely increased.

Investors are watching to see what next could disrupt the market's advance. Stocks have rallied for much of this year, with the Dow and S&P 500 setting record closing highs in the last two sessions. For the year so far, the S&P 500 has climbed 18.9 percent.

"I don't see anything changing without some big macroeconomic shift to the downside. Absent that, you have a fair amount of portfolio managers trailing the indices and I think it's going to continue to be a performance chase," said Michael James, managing director of equity trading at Wedbush Securities in Los Angeles.

The Dow Jones industrial average <.dji> was up 39.27 points, or 0.25 percent, at 15,503.57. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index <.spx> was up 3.47 points, or 0.21 percent, at 1,683.66. The Nasdaq Composite Index <.ixic> was up 8.34 points, or 0.23 percent, at 3,608.42.

The S&P 500 is on track for its eighth straight advance, which would mark its longest upward move since mid-January.

Over the past three weeks, the benchmark S&P 500 has erased a loss of almost 6 percent from a selloff triggered in late May by Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke, when he first raised the prospect of trimming the Fed's $85 billion in monthly stimulus.

Earnings are on the near-term horizon. Analysts expect S&P 500 companies' second-quarter earnings to have grown 2.8 percent from a year earlier, with revenue up 1.5 percent, data from Thomson Reuters showed.

While earnings growth has slowed in recent quarters, it is expected to pick up the last half of the year. Bank of America-Merrill Lynch raised its year-end target for the S&P 500 to 1,750 from 1,600, citing expected earnings growth.

Most companies are exceeding analysts' earnings expectations. Of the companies that have reported second-quarter results so far, 66.7 percent are beating earnings estimates while just 60 percent are exceeding revenue estimates.

S&P 500 industrial shares rose after airlines expressed confidence over the weekend in the safety of Boeing's 787 Dreamliner following a fire on one of the jets last week. Boeing gained 3.5 percent to $105.48.

Utilities outperformed other sectors in the S&P 500, with the sector index <.splrcu> up 1.7 percent. Utility companies, including FirstEnergy Corp and Public Service Enterprise Group Inc , were among the sector's best performers after power grid operators in the U.S. Northeast said they had enough electricity to keep air conditioners running this week through an anticipated heat wave.

Alexion Pharmaceuticals was the S&P 500's worst performer, falling 4.8 percent to $108.73. The company is being eyed for a potential bid by Swiss drugmaker Roche Holding AG

First Solar Inc was the S&P 500's best percentage gainer, rising 6.4 percent to $50.69.
