The Stir: 10 Things Every Woman Going Through A Divorce Wants ...

Written by Aunt Becky on CafeMom's blog, The Stir.

When someone is blindsided by a divorce (even if it's a blessing in disguise), most of her friends and family don't quite know what to say. It doesn't matter how common the end of a marriage is. It never gets easier to come up with just the right words.

It's hard as the friend of the soon-to-be divorcee because you feel as though you're walking on eggshells, and you're trying not to make the situation worse.

As I'm in the middle of a divorce myself, though, I find the people who say nothing at all are the ones I will always remember. So here are some things you can say to your friend who's going through it all to let her know you care.

1) "Can I be your Plus 1 to (insert event here)?" For those of us who've had a built-in Plus 1 for many years, the prospect of going to a wedding or funeral alone can be daunting -- if not impossible.

2) "I love you." It doesn't, in the end, matter much who was at fault in the divorce -- if anyone was. Going through it makes one question everything they ever knew, including whether or not they're loved.

3) "You know I have your back." One of the most important things you can do for your divorced friend is to reassure her that no matter what, you're on her side.

4) "You're not a bad person -- this is just a hard situation." There's a lot of blame that goes around when you're divorcing -- and most of it is self-directed. Sometimes this gentle reassurance is all your friend needs to make it through the day.

5) "This sucks." Sometimes, we forget how hard it is to have your life tilted on its side. Seeing that someone else understands how much it sucks to be you (for the moment) can have a positive impact.

6) "Let's work on getting you sorted out." Especially if the divorcee is new to bills, finances, budgets, and other assorted running-a-household tasks, having someone to guide them through the process can be a lifesaver.

7) "Let me help you by bringing over (food, spa gift card, etc)." Often in the early days of a divorce, it's hard to remember to do the simple things, like eat, or take care of yourself. This is where you come in.

8) "One thing at a time." Your friend is probably so overwhelmed with court dates, kids, and moving out that she is pulled in every direction. Remind her that the only way to get a job done is to do it one baby step at a time.

9) "What do you need?" This can be anything from poring over divorce paperwork or helping brainstorm what to bring up to the lawyer to making grocery lists with your friend.

10) "You are not alone." After being in a relationship for years, a divorce can really do a number on your psyche. Which is why a reminder that you're not in it all by yourself can be exceptionally helpful.

How else can you best help someone who has just separated from her husband?

Clashes in Egypt despite state of emergency

CAIRO (AP) ? Police are firing tear gas at rock-throwing protesters in Cairo a day after Egypt's president declared a state of emergency in three provinces hit hardest by political violence.

The clashes Monday near Tahrir Square mark the fifth consecutive day of street violence in Egypt.

Late Sunday, thousands of protesters demonstrated in Port Said, Ismailiya and Suez to reject President Mohammed Morsi's declaration of a 30-day state of emergency in the three Suez Canal cities and their surrounding provinces.

Those provinces have been the hardest hit by a weekend wave of unrest that has left more than 50 dead.

Morsi declared the state of emergency in a televised address late Sunday and warned that he would not hesitate to take more action to stem Egypt's latest eruption of violence.

Top senators: Tentative deal to curb filibusters

WASHINGTON (AP) ? The Senate's top Democrat and Republican have reached a tentative agreement to clamp modest limits on delaying tactics called filibusters that minority parties use to bottle up legislation in the chamber.

If the deal is supported by rank-and-file senators, it would head off a threat by Senate Majority Harry Reid that Democrats would impose stricter curbs over GOP objections. That would be sure to heighten partisan animosity in the chamber.

Aides to both parties say Reid and Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell will present the package to senators at separate party lunches Thursday.

If there is enough support, the Senate is expected to approve the changes later Thursday.

The deal would reduce ? but not eliminate ? the number of times senators could delay bills.

Exit polls: Netanyahu, allies win Israeli election

(AP Photo/Uriel Sinai, Pool)

(AP) ? Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's Likud Party emerged as the largest faction in a hotly contested parliamentary election on Tuesday, positioning the hard-liner to serve a new term as prime minister, according to exit polls. But a lackluster performance by Likud, along with surprising gains by a centrist newcomer, raised the strong possibility that he will be forced to form a broad coalition.

The exit polls aired on Israel's three major TV stations all forecast Likud along with its traditional hardline and religious allies, capturing a shaky majority of just 61 or 62 seats in the 120-member parliament. With official results trickling in throughout the night, it was possible that the two sides could end in deadlock.

In a statement posted on his Facebook page, Netanyahu said he would reach across the aisle and try to form a broad-based coalition.

"According to the exit polls, it is clear that Israel citizens decided that they want me to continue to serve as prime minister of Israel, and that I form the widest possible majority (coalition)," he said. "Already this evening I will begin working toward the widest possible government."

Such a scenario would have deep implications for Mideast peace prospects. Netanyahu's centrist opponents have said they would not join his government if he does not make a serious push for peace with the Palestinians. Peace talks have been deadlocked throughout Netanyahu's four-year term.

According to the exit polls, Netanyahu's Likud-Yisrael Beitenu bloc captured just 31 seats, far below forecasts of recent opinion polls. The two parties, running separately, had 42 seats in the outgoing house.

In the biggest surprise, the centrist "Yesh Atid," party headed by political newcomer Yair Lapid, captured as many as 19 seats, well above the forecasts. That would position Lapid to become either opposition leader or seek a major Cabinet post if he decides to join Netanyahu's governing coalition.

Lapid campaigned on a platform calling for an end to the generous subsidies and draft exemptions given to ultra-Orthodox Jewish communities. He also has said he would not serve as a "fig leaf" for a hard-line government.

Lapid would likely seek deep concessions for Netanyahu in exchange for joining the government.

Human-tiger conflict: Are the risks overestimated?

Jan. 21, 2013 ? A new study finds a complex web of factors increases perceived risk of tiger attack in the Sundarbans of Bangladesh.

Wildlife conservationists are well aware of the potential conflicts that exist between the endangered species they seek to protect and the human populations which inhabit areas where the animals live. Carnivores, such as tigers, pose a risk to humans and their livestock and can be killed because of this potential risk. Previous research has found that killing of animals can be motivated as much by social and psychological factors, such as perception of danger, as by any actual real risk posed by a species.

A new study published in the Springer journal Human Ecology has identified several key factors which may contribute to perceptions of risk from tigers in a conservation area in Bangladesh. The study, by Chloe Inskip and her colleagues from the Durrell Institute of Conservation and Ecology in Kent, UK, and WildTeam, Bangladesh, is the first to use participatory risk mapping (PRM) and in-depth interviews to explore the wider socio-economic context of human-tiger conflict.

The survey was carried out around the Sundarbans mangrove forests of south-western Bangladesh, home to one of the world's largest remaining tiger populations. Although there are no human inhabitants of the Sundarbans, eight sub-districts with a total population of around 1.7 million people lie directly adjacent to the forest boundary. Records indicate that approximately 30-50 people are killed annually by tigers in the area.

The researchers held 54 semi-structured interviews in six villages which border the Sundarbans forest, followed by 385 questionnaires in a further ten border villages. Of all the issues related to lives and livelihood, tigers were the most commonly reported problem. Other issues recorded were largely poverty-related including low incomes, dependence on natural resources, poor infrastructure and services and a lack of clean water together with soil erosion and weather. Inskip and her colleagues identified the fact that these issues had a direct impact on villagers' perceptions of risk from tigers. The respondents' perceived susceptibility to and their ability to mitigate human-tiger conflict was influenced largely by their poverty related-problems.

The authors suggest that any actions taken to improve these socio-economic issues will also reduce the perceived level of risk from tigers and help to reduce the rate at which tigers are killed. For conservationists, this would mean a shift from traditional models of conflict reduction to holistic models which also incorporate situation-specific actions to reduce risk perceptions. In many poor, rural communities in conservation areas such as the Sundarbans, risk perception reduction is likely to be tied strongly to poverty alleviation.

The authors believe that the abatement of killing endangered species will only be achieved if the human dimensions and social context of human-wildlife conflict situations are well understood and appropriately managed. They conclude that "participatory risk mapping (PRM) and qualitative research are valuable tools for enhancing understanding of and identifying actions to address the wildlife-related risk perceptions which can influence killing behavior." Addressing risk perceptions will require long-term commitment and funding.

Syrian opposition postpones forming government

ISTANBUL (Reuters) - Syrian opposition leaders meeting in Istanbul have postponed forming a transitional government, the Syrian National Coalition said on Monday, in a setback for efforts to fill a power vacuum in the war-torn country.

The talks launched on Saturday were the opposition's second bid to form a government, with its credibility at stake as the country slides into sectarian conflict between majority Sunni muslims and President Bashar al-Assad's minority Alawite sect.

The 70-member coalition, dominated by Islamists and their allies, was formed with Western and Gulf backing in Qatar at the beginning of December. Power struggles among its members have undermined efforts to agree a transitional government.

A five-member committee would to put forward proposals on a government to the coalition within 10 days, it said on Monday.

The committee would "consult opposition forces and the Free Syrian Army and friendly states to get their opinion about forming the government and the extent to which they can honour the necessary commitments for its financial and political viability," the coalition said in a statement.

Sources at the negotiations in Istanbul said on Sunday that Syrian National Coalition President Moaz Alkhatib had flown to Qatar to secure promises of financial aid for a transitional government in rebel-held areas.

The talks had been hit by disagreement over whether a transitional government could survive when Alkhatib left in the middle of deliberations, the sources said.

GenBlog: Family History Through the Alphabet ? Autosomal DNA

Family-History-Through-the-Alphabet

For 26 weeks I will take you on a family history journey through the alphabet, one letter at a time.? I have decided that each post will be educational in nature, focusing on topics related to resources, methodology, tools, etc.? Although the challenge is complete, there are still some people who are finishing up and Alona, the host, is encouraging others to participate anyway.? Additional information on the challenge, can be found at Take the ?Family History Through the Alphabet? Challenge.?

AI guess this is an appropriate topic for today seeing as my own spit is on its way to 23andMe for autosomal DNA testing.? Yep, I spent the better part of the day registering my kit, spitting in a tube, and exploring the 23andMe website.?

Until a few months ago, I had no interest in DNA for genealogy.? Much of my lack of interest was mainly due to my lack of knowledge on the subject.? And while I am certainly no expert, or even a novice really, I came across some helpful information that propelled a decision to give it a whirl in hopes of helping my stepfather discover his birth family.? We had been talking about the various types of DNA tests, not really sure which to do, but when 23andMe dropped their price for autosomal DNA testing to $99, we decided to start there.? I also made the decision to get a kit for myself and for my husband.? For me, while I am interested in the ancestry side of things, I am also very interested in the health aspects that 23andMe offers (I have an uncommon condition and I have seen many people in our online forum community have tested with 23andMe, thus the interest).

I?m excited to see what kind of doors this autosomal DNA testing can open in terms of discovering cousins across all lines.? While I?m curious to see how it might help with my own genealogy (and that of my husband?s), I am more interested to see how this particular test will help with finding my stepfather?s birth families.? (As a side note, we are planning to do both Y-DNA and mtDNA for my stepfather, hopefully giving us a bigger chance to discover his birth family.)

Again, I am no expert, but here are a few things I?ve learned in the last few months.

Types of Tests

  • Y-DNA ? Available for males only.? This tests the Y chromosome, which is passed from father to son, thus your direct paternal line only.? Tests can be done on a variety of marker locations (i.e., 12, 37, 67 or 111).
  • mtDNA ? Available for both males and females.? This tests the mitochondrial DNA, which is passed from the mother to her children (both sons and daughters), and therefore follows the direct maternal line.? FamilyTreeDNA offers a basic test, a ?plus? test, and a ?full sequence? test.?
  • Autosomal ? Available for both males and females. This tests the 22 pairs of chromosomes known as autosomes (the 23rd pair is the sex chromosome). Unlike the Y-DNA and mtDNA tests, autosomal DNA testing doesn?t follow strictly the paternal line or the maternal line and therefore you may be able to discover cousins on any of your lines.

Popular Providers

  • 23andMe ? Provides testing for autosomal DNA only.? Once you?ve tested, their database provides you with matches for potential cousins and will continue to provide matches as new tests come in.? 23andMe also provides health information, which is part of the scientific mission.? Your test results can be downloaded from 23andMe and uploaded to FamilyTreeDNA, giving you a bigger pool to swim in, so to speak.
  • FamilyTreeDNA ? Provides autosomal, Y-DNA, and mtDNA testing.? Once you?ve tested (using any of their tests), their database provides you with matches for potential cousins and will continue to provide matches as new tests come in.? Includes various tools and projects/groups.? You can upload 23andMe autosomal DNA results to FTDNA (for a fee), which I believe gives you the same access to tools and projects, as though you had tested directly with FTDNA.
  • AncestryDNA ? Provides autosomal DNA testing.? Once you?ve tested, their database provides you with matches for potential cousins and will continue to provide matches as new tests come in.? You can link your results to your Ancestry.com family tree.

Resources

There are many different resources out there.? Here are a few that I found helpful.

Why trees can't grow taller than 100 metres

TYPICALLY, the taller the tree, the smaller its leaves. The mathematical explanation for this phenomenon, it turns out, also sets a limit on how tall trees can grow.

Kaare Jensen of Harvard University and Maciej Zwieniecki of the University of California, Davis, compared 1925 tree species, with leaves ranging from a few millimetres to over 1 metre long, and found that leaf size varied most in relatively short trees.

Jensen thinks the explanation lies in the plant's circulatory system. Sugars produced in leaves diffuse through a network of tube-shaped cells called the phloem. Sugars accelerate as they move, so the bigger the leaves the faster they reach the rest of the plant. But the phloem in stems, branches and the trunk acts as a bottleneck. There comes a point when it becomes a waste of energy for leaves to grow any bigger. Tall trees hit this limit when their leaves are still small, because sugars have to move through so much trunk to get to the roots, creating a bigger bottleneck.

Jensen's equations describing the relationship show that as trees get taller, unusually large or small leaves both cease to be viable (Physical Review Letters, doi.org/j6n). The range of leaf sizes narrows and at around 100 m tall, the upper limit matches the lower limit. Above that, it seems, trees can't build a viable leaf. Which could explain why California's tallest redwoods max out at 115.6 m.

Newly found 'volume control' in brain promotes learning, memory

Jan. 9, 2013 ? Scientists have long wondered how nerve cell activity in the brain's hippocampus, the epicenter for learning and memory, is controlled -- too much synaptic communication between neurons can trigger a seizure, and too little impairs information processing, promoting neurodegeneration. Researchers at Georgetown University Medical Center say they now have an answer. In the January 10 issue of Neuron, they report that synapses that link two different groups of nerve cells in the hippocampus serve as a kind of "volume control," keeping neuronal activity throughout that region at a steady, optimal level.

"Think of these special synapses like the fingers of God and man touching in Michelangelo's famous fresco in the Sistine Chapel," says the study's senior investigator, Daniel Pak, PhD, an associate professor of pharmacology. "Now substitute the figures for two different groups of neurons that need to perform smoothly. The touching of the fingers, or synapses, controls activity levels of neurons within the hippocampus."

The hippocampus is a processing unit that receives input from the cortex and consolidates that information in terms of learning and memory. Neurons known as granule cells, located in the hippocampus' dentate gyrus, receive transmissions from the cortex. Those granule cells then pass that information to the other set of neurons (those in the CA3 region of the hippocampus, in this study) via the synaptic fingers.

Those fingers dial up, or dial down, the volume of neurotransmission from the granule cells to the CA3 region to keep neurotransmission in the learning and memory areas of the hippocampus at an optimal flow -- a concept known as homeostatic plasticity. "If granule cells try to transmit too much activity, we found, the synaptic junction tamps down the volume of transmission by weakening their connections, allowing the proper amount of information to travel to CA3 neurons," says Pak. "If there is not enough activity being transmitted by the granule cells, the synapses become stronger, pumping up the volume to CA3 so that information flow remains constant."

There are many such touching fingers in the hippocampus, connecting the so-called "mossy fibers" of the granule cells to neurons in the CA3 region. But importantly, not every one of the billions of neurons in the hippocampus needs to set its own level of transmission from one nerve cell to the other, says Pak.

To explain, he uses another analogy. "It had previously been thought that neurons act separately like cars, each working to keep their speed at a constant level even though signal traffic may be fast or slow. But we wondered how these neurons could process learning and memory information efficiently, while also regulating the speed by which they process and communicate that information.

"We believe, based on our study, that only the mossy fiber synapses on the CA3 neurons control the level of activity for the hippocampus -- they are like the engine on a train that sets the speed for all the other cars, or neurons, attached to it," Pak says. "That frees up the other neurons to do the job they are tasked with doing -- processing and encoding information in the forms of learning and memory."

Not only does the study offer a new model for how homeostatic plasticity in the hippocampus can co-exist with learning and memory, it also suggests a new therapeutic avenue to help patients with uncontrollable seizures, he says.

"The CA3 region is highly susceptible to seizures, so if we understand how homeostasis is maintained in these neurons, we could potentially manipulate the system. When there is an excessive level of CA3 neuronal activity in a patient, we could learn how to therapeutically turn it down."

If your site features a large number of videos, remember that search engine crawlers do not see video content, no matter how high it is in quality. In order to achieve better search engine optimization, make a site map that lists all the videos that you have on your website. This makes sure the crawler can grab the text/keyword and trace it to your site and your videos.

TIPS! If video or audio items are shown on your website, you should have transcripts of these included. The transcripts allow your content to be easily understood by search engine robots.

Search engines are more likely to correctly grasp the content in your website if you use descriptive title tags appropriately. Your titles should not exceed sixty characters, as this is the limit of the majority of search engines. If they do show the content, they do not give it as much consideration.

TIPS! A key to search engine optimization is to include a site map. Your site will be much easier for the spiders to crawl if you include a site map.

Write things that are new and exciting; you will rank higher with search engines. To bring users to your site, you need content that?s unique and interesting. People who like what they read the first time they visit your site are likely to come back a second time.

Search Engine Results

TIPS! One of the top tips for search engine optimization is to not forget to stay on top of your ranking within the search engines. Always monitor your search engine rankings for better optimization of your website, otherwise your site might not be doing as well as you think it?s doing.

Write meta tags that engage the reader on each website page, this can help you obtain good search engine results. These description tags are important, as they show up below the title of your page in search engine results. The content that you use on your meta tag should be concise and valuable. Doing so will increase your website?s traffic and raise your rank on search engines.

TIPS! Use descriptive keywords in your Meta tag to make your site more visible. Add a concise description to every meta tag on your site.

Don?t create a page that only contain links. Instead, try to blend them in for best results. Link pages will not hold the interest of viewers and will be ranked accordingly by search engines. Keeping the links on your site integrated into your text makes your content look more professional, and helps search engines rank your site higher in searches.

TIPS! The most important thing that you can do for your site is to make sure that you always keep the content on the site fresh and unique. If people feel like they are reading old information they will not want to read it.

Before committing to an outside SEO company for promoting your site, get a feel for what they do before you make a commitment. Find out what sort of techniques they employee, how much experience they have in your field and how long it you have to wait before you can expect to see results. Also ask for referrals, and see if there is place where you can view work they have done in the past. Any reliable company would be happy to comply with your request.

Search engine optimization also optimizes your number of potential customers. A lot of businesses do not realize this fact.

TIPS! Part of using SEO to drive site traffic is ensuring that your site uses effective coding. For example, a site that relies heavily upon JavaScript must be coded efficiently, so that it can be indexed by search engine spiders.

When working to maximize your SEO, try weaving keyword phrases into the title tag of your HTML. Keywords that appear in title tags are weighted more heavily by search engines than keywords in any other position. Use the strongest keyword for the best results, and drive more traffic to your site!

TIPS! Consider pay-per-click arrangements as a means to lucrative affiliate marketing. The pay is not very high, but over time, the profits will start to add up.

You can get a little more SEO performance by taking your website into the blogging world. Start a blog of your own, and get involved with other blogs that cover related topics. Since search engines like highly-structured websites and new content, blogs often rank high on them. Backlinks also play a large role in search engine rankings.

TIPS! Take the initiative to request that a non-profit or educational site link back to your site content. Being linked up to reliable sources can help raise your search rankings.

Consider moving into the podcast world. Podcasts are either a video or an audio program, that are sometimes streamed live, containing timely and relevant information consumers would want to listen to or view. Due to the ease of access to the podcasting world, this form of marketing is gaining a lot of traction with businesses who want to a new way to talk to their consumers. Write out a description of your podcast, using keywords, to help people find your podcast during a search.

TIPS! If you are completely unfamiliar with SEO, you should first focus on mastering one of the most important concepts. No matter how much time and energy you put into learning SEO, you will never become an expert at every trick.

An easy way to boost your page ranking immediately is to buy a previously owned domain name that already has a good reputation. Older domain names have more weight with search engines. Look for domains that were dropped recently and determine if any of them is a fit for your site.

Search Engines

TIPS! The proper utilization of keywords in your articles can really give your business a more prominent ranking with search engines, and greater exposure to potential customers. When search engines detect search-relevant keywords in your articles, they will rank them higher.

Creating a site map can really have a positive impact on your business, as search engines are able to index your pages more easily. Site maps enable search engines to navigate to any page, from anywhere on your site. Adding a site map is an easy way to improve your rank with popular search engines.

TIPS! You should ensure that each META description tag is unique for each page. Using the exact same content in all of your meta description tags is frowned upon by the algorithms that the search engines use to rank you.

Your website should be easy to read and navigate. If you want to improve your search engine ranking, make sure you site is neatly designed and accessible for a variety of users. Your website should be accessible and easy for your readers to engage in and simple for search engines to recognize.

TIPS! A title tag will make sure you are recognized by search engines, and they will then be able to understand your web page. Keep your text down to 60 characters or less, since many search engines cut off the content at that point.

There?s a lot to search engine optimization, but as was stated earlier in the article, it?s absolutely essential to make sure your website gets the business it deserves. Make sure to apply these techniques to your website, as soon as possible, so that you can start getting more customers and more profits.

iSmartAlarm uses a WiFi camera and iPhone app to warn you of potential burglars

iSmartAlarm is a home security alarm, but not the kind that uses a shrill sound to send burglars scrambling. The alarm system, currently a project on Indiegogo, is a $79 WiFi camera that sends alerts to a corresponding iPhone app. Essentially, when the camera detects someone in the home, it will send a notice to your phone in the form of a text, email or phone call. The camera itself has a series of LED lights around the lens, so it will still work even if you've turned off all the lights. Once you do get an alert you can dig into the app itself, where you can see a screenshot of the potential culprit, and choose to either ignore the alert or dial 911. For now, the app is for iOS only, though a company rep told us an Android version is in the works. Until then, check out our hands-on photos below and a quickie demo video after the break.

Pope calls for urgent aid for civilians in Syria

(AP) ? Pope Benedict XVI has urged diplomats to supply urgent aid to Syria to relieve civilian suffering, while expressing hope that Jerusalem would become "a city of peace and not of division."

Benedict addressed urgent crises around the world in an annual speech to diplomats Monday. Starting with the Middle East, "that privileged region in God's plan," the pope warned that continued conflict in Syria will leave "nothing but a field of ruins." The pope said he hoped Israelis and Palestinians will commit "to peaceful coexistence."

Addressing the economic crisis closer to home, the pontiff called on the European Union to make "farsighted" and "difficult" policy decisions favoring growth.

He called on policymakers to monitor closely the disparity between rich and poor as they do differences in bond market yields.

Blatter: Boateng protest was 'strong, courageous'

By GRAHAM DUNBAR

ZURICH (AP) -FIFA President Sepp Blatter has praised Kevin-Prince Boateng for making a "strong and courageous" stand by leading his AC Milan teammates off the pitch to protest racial abuse by fans in Italy last week.

But Blatter told the FIFA Ballon d'Or ceremony on Monday that such protests are not the solution to stop discrimination inside stadiums.

"That is praiseworthy," Blatter said of the Ghana midfielder's action during the first half of a friendly against a fourth-tier Italian club. "But it cannot be the solution in the long term.

"We have to find other sustainable solutions to tackle the problem of racism and discrimination at its roots," Blatter said. "Otherwise, such stands will be made in isolation and lost in the heat of general polemic."

Earlier, Cristiano Ronaldo said it was "incredible" that fans still racially abuse players, but questioned if Boateng was right to walk off the pitch.

Boateng was supported by former Barcelona coach Pep Guardiola who suggested the player and his club acted "because they believe it was fair."

Blatter acknowledged that Boateng sent out a strong signal.

"A way of saying: this has gone this far, but it goes no further," the FIFA chief said. "Football must not separate people. Football brings people together."

Ronaldo expressed surprise that players were still being racially abused inside stadiums.

"I think this cannot happen in this moment in football," he told reporters before the ceremony. "Because, over time, FIFA, UEFA always speak about fair play and against racism.

"And why is this still happening? It's incredible. This is going to give more power for the racists, the whites against blacks. We should live in peace, all of us."

However, Ronaldo said "you cannot simply walk off" as Boateng did.

"We have to cope have to cope with this kind of audience in the stadium," said the Portugal captain, who suggested that incidents sometimes involve "just a few people. Maybe they have a couple of screws loose."

(AP) ? Congress' excruciating, extraordinary New Year's Day approval of a compromise averting a prolonged tumble off the fiscal cliff hands President Barack Obama most of the tax boosts on the rich that he campaigned on. It also prevents House Republicans from facing blame for blocking tax cuts for most American households, though most GOP lawmakers parted ways with Speaker John Boehner and opposed the measure.

Passage also lays the groundwork for future battles between the two sides over federal spending and debt.

Capping a holiday season political spectacle that featured enough high and low notes for a Broadway musical, the GOP-run House voted final approval for the measure by 257-167 late Tuesday. That came after the Democratic-led Senate used a wee-hours 89-8 roll call to assent to the bill, belying the partisan brinkmanship that colored much of the path to the final deal.

"A central promise of my campaign for president was to change the tax code that was too skewed towards the wealthy at the expense of working middle-class Americans," Obama said at the White House before flying to Hawaii to resume his holiday break. "Tonight we've done that."

The bill would boost the top 35 percent income tax rate to 39.6 percent for incomes exceeding $400,000 for individuals and $450,000 for couples, while continuing decade-old income tax cuts for everyone else. In his re-election campaign last year Obama had vowed to boost rates on earnings at somewhat lower levels ? $200,000 for individuals and $250,000 for families.

Scores of GOP lawmakers voted for the measure, reversing a quarter-century of solid Republican opposition to boosting any tax rates at all.

The bill would also raise taxes top earners pay on dividends, capital gains and inherited estates; permanently stop the alternative minimum tax from raising levies on millions of middle-income families; extend expiring jobless benefits; prevent cuts in Medicare reimbursements to doctors; and delay for two months billions in budget-wide cuts in defense and domestic programs slated for this year.

Both sides lamented their failure to reach a significant deficit-cutting agreement. But neither much mentioned another omission: The immediate expiration of a two-year, 2-percentage-point cut in the Social Security payroll tax.

That break, which put an extra $1,000 in the wallets of typical families earning $50,000 a year, was an Obama priority two years ago as a way to boost consumer spending and spark the flagging economy, but it fell victim this time to other priorities.

House Democrats voted by an overwhelming 172-16 for the agreement, which was crafted over the weekend by Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., and Vice President Joe Biden.

But Republicans tilted against it 151-85. It is rare for leaders to bring a bill to the House floor that will be opposed by most lawmakers from their own party, and the decision underscored the pressure GOP leaders felt to approve the legislation.

Boehner, R-Ohio, took no public stance on the measure before the vote. But he guided the compromise to the House floor after an unsuccessful attempt by many conservatives to persuade leaders to add spending cuts to the bill.

Had the House inserted those budget cuts and the Senate refused to consider them, the legislation could have died. That left House Republicans worried that voters might blame them for a huge, sweeping tax increase and for any swoon the nation's financial markets might take when they reopened Wednesday.

"You can be right and you can be dead right. Which is it?" said Rep. Rich Nugent, R-Fla., of the quandary Republicans faced. "Right now you need to take the tax issue off the table" and move on to a focus on curbing spending, he said.

Boehner voted for the bill, an unusual step because speakers seldom vote, and he was joined by Rep. Paul Ryan, R-Wis., the GOP's vice presidential candidate last fall. Voting "no" were the other two top GOP leaders, Reps. Eric Cantor of Virginia and Kevin McCarthy of California.

Passage came nearly 24 hours after a decade's worth of tax cuts enjoyed by tens of millions of Americans expired with the stroke of the new year, technically raising taxes by more than $500 billion in 2013 alone.

Those tax increases ? plus $109 billion in defense and domestic spending cuts that were to be automatically triggered Wednesday ? became known as the fiscal cliff. Economists warned that their combined impact would hurl the economy back into recession, but Obama's signature on the bill would prevent the "cliff" from taking hold.

Obama can sign the bill remotely using a machine called an "autopen," or the bill can be flown to Hawaii for his signature.

Overall, the legislation would add nearly $4 trillion to federal deficits over the next decade compared with what would have happened had all the tax cuts expired, according to the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office.

"I'm embarrassed for this generation. Future generations deserve better," complained one foe, Rep. Louie Gohmert, R-Texas.

The agreement's journey to passage was a tortured one. It included negotiations between Obama and Boehner on a larger, deficit-cutting deal that collapsed, and a failed effort by the speaker to drum up enough GOP votes to pass a "Plan B" that would have limited tax boosts to incomes exceeding $1 million.

It took weekend talks between McConnell and Biden, former Senate colleagues, to craft the more modest package that focused on averting the worst impacts of the fiscal cliff while postponing any deficit reduction efforts to coming months.

Those first showdowns will come over the next three months, when the government's legal ability to borrow money will expire and temporary financing for federal agency budgets will expire. Republicans have already said that, as they did in 2011, they will demand spending cuts as a condition for extending the debt ceiling.

"Now the focus turns to spending" and overhauling the tax code, Boehner said in a written statement after the vote. He said the GOP will fight for "significant spending cuts and reforms to the entitlement programs that are driving our country deeper and deeper into debt," a reference to costly benefit programs like Medicare, Social Security and Medicaid.

Spending cuts are "going to be a component of every single battle we have" in the new Congress, conservative GOP Rep. Marsha Blackburn of Tennessee told CNN on Wednesday.

Obama, in his White House remarks, said that while he was open to compromise, he would demand deficit-cutting savings from added revenue on the well-off, not just spending cuts.

He also pointedly said he would "not have another debate with this Congress" over extending the federal borrowing limit.

"If Congress refuses to give the United States government the ability to pay these bills on time, the consequences for the entire global economy would be catastrophic ? far worse than the impact of a fiscal cliff," he said.

Though its focus was on taxes, the measure approved Tuesday would prevent a potential doubling of milk prices and prevent a $900 salary increase for members of Congress in March. Its extension of jobless benefits would help 2 million people out of work at least six months, and it would prevent a 27 percent cut in reimbursements doctors get for treating Medicare patients.

Weighing in with criticism of the compromise were the chief authors of an influential bipartisan deficit-cutting proposal, former GOP Sen. Alan Simpson and Democrat Erskine Bowles, a former White House chief of staff under President Bill Clinton. They called the measure "truly a missed opportunity to do something big to reduce our long term fiscal problems."

Setting a Goal | Walking a Different Path

I?ve not met my goals. ?I have 2 weeks left to meet my weight loss goal ? but given that I?ve gained weight over the holidays, I?m not expecting to meet that one. ? I?m still going to try though :)

Over the last week or two, I?ve noticed heartburn. ?It?s kept me up at night. ?It?s made snuggling uncomfortable.

Do you know what causes heartburn???

1. Caffeine
2. Alcohol
3. Carbonated drinks
4. Acidic foods & drinks (tomatoes, oranges)
5. Chocolate

Plus some other stuff? ibuprophen?. asprin? stuff like that.

Guess what I?ve been living on for the last 2 weeks?

1. Caffeine (coffee & hot chocolate)
2. Alcohol (wine, eggnog & rum, jello shots)
3. Carbonated drinks (lots of pop and bubbly drinks)
4. Acidic foods (tomato sauces, oranges, V8 juice)
5. Chocolate. ?Lots and lots and lots of chocolate.

Tell me, dear readers, where in this list is healthy food? ? ?Yeah, there?s not.

I would wake up and eat chocolate. ? ?Have coffee. ? Have more coffee. ?Have more chocolate. ?Maybe grab an orange. ?Make dinner, drink more coffee. ?Switch to coke. ?Maybe some rum & coke. ? Wine.

Christmas was not good for me, health wise. ?Emotionally, I was a mess. ?I took it out on my food choices. ?I tried to stuff the emotions with food & chocolate & other not-good-for-me food & beverages.

I had a plan to make changes last week. ? That didn?t last long. ? Emotions just about killed me. ? Grief during the holidays? ? Not a good situation. ? I barely made it through my friend?s New Year?s party.

I resolved not to make any resolutions? but tomorrow is January 2. ?Instead I?m setting goals.

My first goal is to pass my skills test. ? ?That?s in February.

Second goal? Run the Vancouver Sun Run on April 21.

Tonight, I?m trying to work my way through the heartburn and hopefully get a good night?s sleep.

Tomorrow, I?ll get the plan going? I?m worth it.

60 Minutes Poll: Love, Sex, Relationships, and How We Drive Each ...

Herewith, astonishing evidence that romance doesn?t fade but actually strengthens. Which segment of the population is least likely to believe in love at first sight? Not the marrieds! Not those in relationships! It?s those of us not in relationships who express the most skepticism about such moments.

In contrast, the moment we find ourselves married or in a relationship, June is bustin? out all over. (Another possible explanation: we?ve started swigging?sorry, swiggin??the Kool-Aid.) Nearly three-quarters of us consider open relationships either a mistake or a sin. Also, almost half of Americans feel that asking a father for his daughter?s hand is ?a necessary courtesy,? as opposed to just 3 percent who see it as ?sexist and offensive.? And the in-law lovefest doesn?t stop there: 71 percent of us claim to ?get along well? with the families of our significant others. That?s not surprising if the definition of getting along well means not exchanging gunfire. Otherwise ...
