Max is no Maxwell Smart | The Lost Dogs' Home
Unlike Maxwell Smart, little Max is no accidental hero. This seven-month-old Border Collie and Kelpie mix is one intelligent and entertaining fellow who has brightened the lives of his new family.
The Ryan family were on the look out for a new four-legged family member in addition to their existing pet Roscoe, a five-year-old tabby cat. They were searching online through The Lost Dogs? Home adoptions page when they came across Max,
?My husband was keen on a Kelpie, and I wanted a Border Collie. We came across Max who was a mix and still a puppy at four-months and three-weeks, so he seemed perfect. His face was so intelligent looking and adorable. We fell in love! The next day we were on our way to? Echuca to meet and pick him up.?
As with all potenial adoptees, the Ryan family spent time getting to know Max at the shelter and sat the Pet Licence Test before adopting him,
?We first met with staff who gave us some background on Max, in particular his personality and what was known about his history. Then we were taken to meet him and took some time to introduce ourselves to each other. There was no doubt that Max was friendly and obviously intelligent dog, and we loved him and knew he would be a perfect fit for our family. Then it was a matter of filling in paperwork, including the Pet Licence. We were also given information about his vaccinations and general health care,? Sue said.
?The staff kindly gave us a couple of blankets for the ride home, we then paid the adoption fee and were on our way,? she added.
The road trip from Echuca back to Melbourne passed without any bumps, infact Sue recalled that Max appeared to enjoy the drive,
?He was amazing in the car. Throughout the four-hour drive, he didn?t fret once and just laid with his head on our daughters lap and slept for most of it.?
Aside from setting up his space in his new home, the Ryan family have also provided Max with plenty to chew on,
?He is in the puppy chewing phase ? the only thing to withstand it all is a chew rope and that is his favourite.?
Working dogs like Border Collies and Kelpies are very active and bright dogs, who love to work and therefore require lots of mental stimulation as well as exercise, and Max is demonstrating traits true to his breed.
??Max has a habit of trying to round you up when he is bored and Roscoe is on occasion his one cat herd, ?When he first laid eyes on the cat, who was sitting by a window, Max came hurtling up to say hello?Roscoe is genuinely keen to befriend Max, but has had to give Max a couple of friendly swipes to the nose to keep him in line- but they are gradually getting used to each other.?
The Ryan Family wisely organised a dog trainer to come to their house for the first week, ?It was crucial for us to learn how to show Max his place in the family and to learn how to train him.?
?He now sits on command, comes when called, stays and is obedient on the lead, although he is still learning to walk at our pace instead of that of a greyhound! He is improving in his social interactions with other dogs and is more relaxed when he sees them out on our walks.?
Sue said that Max is an easy going, well-rounded, happy-go-lucky kind of canine and while ?he has bonded well with the whole family, Sue said Max loves Stephen?s company the most,
?He is known as the site manager at home, following Steve around our five-acres and can often be seen trotting along behind the ute, or chewing on a branch in the shade whilst Steve is working or just putting his head in to check out what he is doing.?
Now totally settled in, the Ryan family could not be happier with their decision to adopt Max, ?Watching Max grow and become a part of the family, and seeing that he is happy and trusts is a rewarding experience. ?We would never purchase from a pet store, and preferred not to buy from a breeder, instead we wanted to give a surrendered dog another chance at a loving home and family. It has been the best decision ever.?

GOP Congressman Relied On Millions In Government Contracts To Build His Company
But, as King now acknowledges, government contracts were a key part of his business going back some time. In 1987, he sued a client who had not paid him. An affidavit King filed includes a letter the future congressman sent to a customer in 1985 requesting payment. Explaining his urgency, King wrote at the time, ?as you are aware, we are in a very depressed farm economy and my only other market for my works is contract work from various government agencies.?
Documents show that King?s company worked regularly for various local governments throughout the 1990s and 2000s. In 1994, he demolished a firehouse for the City of Odebolt for $15,500. In 1998, he took about $82,000 from the same city for a memorial walk. In 2002, the company made $64,000 from Crawford County to stabilize a building, followed a few months later by a $141,000 contract with the City of Battle Creek for wastewater treatment improvements.
The next year, King was elected to Congress and his son took over the company, taking in at least 10 other municipal contracts through 2011 worth up to $200,000 each for everything from road construction to water treatment improvements. Altogether, from the firehouse demolition in 1994 to through a grading job for a local utility last year, King Construction made at least $1,665,000 in government contracts.
When asked about his company and its substantial government assistance, King told Salon, ?I built it. I built it on low-bid ? both private and public ? contracts. I created jobs and saved the taxpayers money on every road I built.?
King is just the latest Republican whose anti-government rhetoric is tripped up by a personal experience of how important government assistance can be to business owners. Even vice presidential candidate Rep. Paul Ryan?s (R-WI) family business relied on government contracts, while almost every small business featured by the Romney campaign has had some financial help from the government.

Arthouse, commercial cinema can't be separated: Filmmaker ...
Mumbai, Oct 21 (IANS) Filmmaker Prashant Rasailly?s second directorial venture ?Kathaa? has been screened Sunday at the ongoing 14th edition of Mumbai Film Festival and he feels that there is no divide between arthouse and commercial cinema.
He wrapped up ?Kathaa? shooting within 14 days. Shot at 12,000 ft altitude in Gyantok, Sikkim, the horror movie stars Saugat Malla, Usha Rajak.
?I personally feel that you can?t completely separate art and commercial films nowadays. It?s more of art ? for artistic films your commerce is involved and you can make money out of it, so it becomes commercial.?
?I really don?t have a clear picture about what is art and what is commercial at this time. If you make a good film, then any good film will do business. Artistic films can be commercial and commercial films can be made artistic,? he added.
Asked if he wants to make a typical commercial Bollywood film, he said: ?I don?t know what a typical Bollywood film is like as entertainment, comedy is there in each film. So if you talk about proper masala film right now, I am not much sure about that. But there is no harm in trying.?
?I think Bollywood films are entertaining millions of people. People like it, pay for it, so I think Bollywood has its own space,? he added.
Prashant, who hails from Sikkhim, debuted as a director with ?Acharya?, which was screened at the 13th edition of Mumbai Film Festival.
He says it is very satisfying when his films are showcased at festivals.
?Film festivals are good platform for people who have different ideas?at least film festivals puts you somewhere,? said the director who assisted Anurag Basu in ?Kites?.
?At festivals if you are recognised, it is the satisfaction that you get from your work. But at the same time, you also have to get returns of whatever you have invested in your film?If you get that back, you will be happy,? he added.

Affordable Android-powered MG device targets young gamers
A Wi-Fi-only Android device called the MG was announced for pre-order today. Apparently MG stands for More Game, or My Generation, or something. It isn't made by anybody you've heard of, but they're hoping the low pricetag, preloaded games, parental controls, and included $10 credit towards Google Play apps will rope in at least a few moms and dads.
The MG has a Gorilla glass-clad 4-inch 480 x 800 display, a 1880 mAh battery with 3.75 hours of playtime, and a 1.3 megapixel front-facing camera. It runs Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich and is powered by a single-core 1 GHz processor. Needless to say, hardcore gamers may be more interested in the Xperia Play, aged as it may be, since there are familiar hardware gaming controls included. It seems like MG is geared more towards to younger kids and their parents that want to monitor usage, though.

TDSB considers closing smaller schools to dig out of debt
Torontonians are being invited to share their visions for education in an ambitious effort to rethink public schools ? even as staff at the Toronto District School Board draw up budget-cutting plans to close small schools and house kindergarten classes in pre-fab?portables.?
The disconnect is symptomatic of growing tension at the TDSB, a tug-of-war that pits the demands of parents against the demands of the budget.

Over the next six weeks, the board will hold one of the largest rounds of community consultation it has ever undertaken. Toronto parents will be asked about the kinds of programming they?d like to see in their schools ? anything from better access to French immersion to high-tech classrooms is on the table ? as part of an initiative the board calls its ?K-to-12 strategy.?
Before any of their ideas can bear fruit, however, the TDSB will have to dig itself out of a financial hole so deep it led the province to freeze funding for major construction.
School closings may be part of the answer, according to the board?s top official, Director of Education Chris Spence.
?Yes, there are going to be consolidations,? he said in an interview.
By starting the discussion with programming he is hopeful that parents will realize that some schools ? most likely the smallest ones ? will have to close, in order to ensure that students across the city can get the sort of education their parents want.
?The big question that isn?t being asked in these consultations is how we?re going to fund all of this,? agreed Trustee Pamela Gough. But she says it would be a mistake to close the smallest schools.
?Unlike the director, I love small schools,? she said. ?When schools are too big, they become inhumane places. I think that?s already happening in some schools where the teachers can?t get to know all the students.?
Trustee Elizabeth Moyer was more supportive of the need to consider the politically risky idea of closing schools.
?We?ve been needing to close schools for a long time,? she said.
Programming across the board is piecemeal, and some students must travel across the city to find arts-focused programming or technology and design classes. Ms. Moyer said the K-to-12 strategy will help homogenize those programs and identify schools to be closed and sold off to fund them.
She found other cost-cutting measures board staff have suggested more worrisome, including using pre-fabricated portables as a cheaper and faster way to accommodate full-day kindergarten.
?They may be cheap to build but they require more maintenance, or if they only last 10 years, you might not end up making any savings,? she said.
Dr. Spence said the pre-fabricated units the board was considering allowed for lots of natural light and were tailored to kindergarten.
?We want to make sure we?re making a great learning environment for our students but fiscal restraints and bringing costs down is an imperative,? he said.
Construction costs have been a problem for the board. It came under fire earlier this year for overspending on minor projects and then last week the Ontario government froze funding for major capital spending and slammed the board for running over budget on 25 per cent of its construction projects.
Dr. Spence has hired an external consultant to review one TDSB construction project that recently ran more than $11-million over budget. His hope is that this review, the community consultations ? which will be completed in late November ? and the pre-fabricated kindergarten units will get the board back on track and restore its relationship with the province before the end of the calendar year.

Alabama, Florida top initial BCS standings

Alabama and Florida are at the top of the season's first BCS standings, making it yet another all-SEC top two, with Oregon and Kansas State close behind the Gators.

The Crimson Tide in first was no surprise. Alabama is an overwhelming No. 1 in both polls used in the BCS formula. Florida in second was less anticipated. The Gators are No. 3 in the polls, but rated best by the computer rankings That gave them a slight edge over Oregon and Kansas State when the numbers were crunched. Florida's BCS average is .9092. Oregon's is .8993 and Kansas State's is .8963.
Notre Dame is fifth and not too far back at .8774.
Despite the strong showing by the Southeastern Conference, another all-SEC national championship game is still a long shot. Oregon's schedule is backloaded with strong opponents and the Ducks will likely be able to close the gap in the computers if they keep winning.
The Ducks play Arizona State on Thursday (5-1) and still have games against Southern California and Oregon State left, and a possible Pac-12 title game.
Florida has some tough games left, too, starting Saturday against South Carolina.
With half the season still to play, there are plenty possibilities and teams still alive.
Teams with one loss, such as sixth-place LSU, seventh-place South Carolina, ninth-place Oklahoma and 10th-place USC are still very much in the race as long as they keep winning.
Oregon State is in eighth, the lowest rated of the unbeaten teams.
This is safe to say: If Alabama keeps winning, the Tide will play for its second straight national title, and third in four seasons.
Alabama has never before been first in the initial standings. Seven times since the Bowl Championship Series was implemented in 1998, the team that was first in the initial standings went on to play in the BCS title game.
Seven times the team that started second played for the BCS title. And only twice has neither of the teams that were in the top two spots in the first standings reached the title game.

Acute vs. Chronic Low Back Pain - Johnston, RI Patch
Odds are that if you are over the age of 18 you have had at least one instance of lower back pain. I know I have.? It's not a fun experience.?
Back pain, if the symptoms are severe enough, is completely debilitating.? You feel like you can't even get out of bed fearing you might move or twist the wrong way sending shooting pain throughout your body.? There are different ways you should treat acute vs. chronic low back pain.? Here are some guidelines to follow should you be faced with back pain in the future.?
Acute low back pain is an injury that has just occured within the past 24 hours.? Causes can be as simple as fluffing a sheet or sneezing (don't laugh, I've treated people due to this).? Back pain symptoms usually include pain (big surprise there), decreased spinal motion, muscle spasm, and some loss of functional mobility.?
When you have acute low back pain, you want to ice for the first 24-72 hours.? It might not be comfortable but it is the best thing that you can do at first.? Just try to wait it out moving as much as you can comfortably.? Hopefully, the pain will subside and you will be able to get back to your normal daily tasks without needing to visit your MD or Physical Therapist.? If the pain persists longer than the 72-hour mark you can start to use heat to sooth the muscles and hopefully promote some more mobility.? If it does persist you should make an appointment to get some treatment for your condition.
Chronic low back pain is usually pain that persists longer than 30 days. (The exact distinction is a gray area.) The rules are different for low back pain that has lasted this long.? Heat can still be used to help warm up the spine and supporting muscles.? From there, you want to get moving as much as you can.? You can push through a little bit of pain as long as the pain does not spike.? Studies have shown that exercises and moving have been more helpful with chronic pain than resting and avoiding activity.? If you have chronic low back pain then you are going to have some restrictions somewhere.? This means you are going to be weak in some areas and tight/inhibited in others.? You need to consult with a Physical Therapist to make sure you are working on the right muscles.? They will assess what is weak and what movements you cannot perform.? From there you will be assigned exercises and activities that will help to correct your deficits. (You might even get a back massage while you are there. Not half bad.)? With their guidance and your hard work you will be on your way to a healthy, pain-free low back.?

Mediterranean Salad, Skinny and Delicious with Weight Watchers ...
This colorful, low fat, high fiber salad was a real hit when I first tested it on my girlfriends when they came over for dinner. I knew they really liked it when they all asked for the recipe!? It?s so easy to make, super satisfying and chock full of yummy Italian flavors. I especially love the flavor of the peperoncinis in this salad. They give it a little zip! The skinny for 1 main course salad, 171 calories, 5 grams of fat and 4 Weight Watchers POINTS PLUS.
Prep Time: 15 minutes
Ingredients
1 bag romaine lettuce
3 cups fresh spinach, (from a bag) chopped
1? cups (6 ounces) diced cooked turkey breast, see shopping tip
1? cups fresh cherry or grape tomatoes, sliced int half or tomatoes chopped
? cup red onions, diced
? cup peperoncini or banana pepper, sliced, see shopping tip
1 (2? oz) small can black sliced
1 cup white kidney beans (cannellini beans) rinsed and drained
1 cup yellow bell peppers, diced
1 cup red bell peppers, diced
? cup plus 2 tablespoons Girards Light Caesar or Champagne dressing, Cardini?s Light Caesar vinaigrette or your favorite light Italian-style dressing
6 tablespoon Parmesan cheese, shredded or grated, optional
Instructions
1. In a large bowl, add all salad ingredients except salad dressing and cheese. Refrigerate until ready to serve.
2. To serve: toss in dressing and divide among 6 plates. Sprinkle each salad with 1 tablespoon Parmesan, if desired

Peperoncini also spelled pepperoncini, are a type of mild, yellow-green chili pepper. They are in the same botanical family as bell peppers and many other hotter varieties of chili peppers.? Most of us know peperoncinis as pickled peppers, which are preserved in vinegar in commercially packaged jars. Banana peppers or yellow wax peppers may also be sold as peperoncini.
Kidney beans that are white in color are known as cannellini beans.
Shopping Tips
I bought my sliced turkey breast from Trader Joe?s. They sell it in 8 ounce packages. I like their Italian-style. You can buy sliced turkey breast in all supermarkets in the deli aisle or have them slice it for you from the deli counter.
Peperoncini are sold in jars in the same aisle where pickles and olives are sold. They either come whole or sliced. Banana peppers are much milder and will also work for this recipe. Store the jar in the refrigerator once opened. They are great to add to salads and sandwiches.

The Digital Humanities Design Consultant will be hired as part of The?Humanities in a Digital Age initiative (HDA). HDA is
intended to enrich and promote rigorous cross-disciplinary humanities?scholarship and research, to open new opportunities for high caliber graduate?placements in the humanities, and to enrich the undergraduate experience by
providing undergraduate students access to and support for cutting-edge?humanities research. This initiative will help develop new?services to support digitally enriched scholarship by graduate students and?faculty in a wider range of fields. Working together, the?Libraries and the College of Liberal Arts intend to build a community of?practice for the digital humanities at Penn State through programming,?services, and research collaborations. The consultant will be encouraged to?conduct/continue their own research. He or she will?participate in national and/or international initiatives or professional?activities which promote the development of a shared humanities research?infrastructure.
**Responsibilities:**
- Work directly with researchers to provide project definition and analysis, such as project scope, requirements, specifications and/or design.
- Evaluate existing tools and technologies, and investigates emerging technologies to identify potential uses in humanities research.
- Prototype demonstration projects and/or implements tools for use by others.
- Collaborate with colleagues in the Libraries, Liberal Arts, and Information Technology Services to help ensure harmony among various technology infrastructures and needs.
- Provide limited technical support for digital humanities research projects, including implementation of tools, technology, etc. to help researcher achieve goals.
- Provide training, group instruction or workshops.
**Required Qualifications:**
Requires an advanced degree in a humanities field; demonstrated?proficiency/fluency with one or more technologies commonly used in digital?humanities projects, such as database design and development, XML-encoding,?GIS; experience deploying information technology tools/services in his or her?own research; excellent communication skills; and a strong service?orientation. Preferred Qualifications include a PhD in a?humanities field and a record of professional presentations and/or?publications.

WHY IT MATTERS: Abortion and birth control
The issue:
Whether women have access to abortion services and birth control is a longstanding and divisive issue in politics, and it has flared up from time to time in this campaign despite the candidates' reticence to dwell on such hot-button topics.

Where they stand:
President Barack Obama supports abortion rights. His health care law requires contraceptives to be available for free for women enrolled in workplace health plans.
Republican Mitt Romney opposes abortion rights, though he previously supported them. He says Roe v. Wade, the Supreme Court ruling establishing abortion rights, should be reversed, which would allow states to ban abortion. He would end federal aid to Planned Parenthood, a major provider of abortion and contraception, and has criticized mandatory coverage for contraception as a threat to religious liberty when it's applied to employers, such as Catholic hospitals, that disagree.

Why it matters:
There's been a lot of heated talk this year by Democrats contending that Republicans are waging a "war on women." That's hyperbole, retorts the GOP, but there are indeed stark differences between the two parties over these volatile issues.
Obama's Affordable Care Act, which Republicans opposed and want to repeal, vastly expands women's access to copay-free preventive health care, including contraception.
The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops and many conservative Protestant evangelicals have denounced this contraception mandate, saying it violates religious freedom. The provision generally exempts houses of worship, but faith-affiliated employers would have to comply.
Obama's campaign has been running ads aimed at female voters, noting that Romney supports overturning Roe v. Wade and has assailed the contraception coverage requirement as a "war on religion."
Were Romney to be elected, his ability to push through tough federal abortion restrictions would probably be limited unless Republicans gained firm control of both chambers of Congress.
However, the next president ? Obama or Romney ? could have huge influence over the future of abortion policy if vacancies arise on the Supreme Court. For example, if two seats held by liberal justices were vacated and filled by Romney-nominated conservatives, prospects for a reversal of Roe v. Wade would increase.
"That's bigger than everything else combined, because of the long-term consequences," said anti-abortion activist Charmaine Yoest, president of Americans United for Life.
Another issue of contention is the federally financed family planning program known as Title X. Romney has proposed ending the program, as well as all other federal money for Planned Parenthood. Obama supporters say this could be harmful to the large numbers of women who rely on Planned Parenthood clinics for affordable birth control, breast-cancer screenings and other services.
Aside from the presidential and congressional elections, there's a lot riding on the results of state-level elections. Anti-abortion activists hope for further gains to accelerate a dramatic trend of the past decade: the enactment of scores of laws restricting access to abortion in states with Republican-controlled legislatures.
Among these measures are laws in several states prohibiting abortion after 20 weeks of pregnancy, on the disputed premise that fetuses can feel pain at that stage; and a South Dakota law requiring doctors to warn women seeking abortions that they face increased risk of suicide by undergoing the procedure. In Mississippi, the lone abortion clinic is threatened with closure because of a new law requiring abortion providers to have hospital admitting privileges.
In some parts of the country, abortion providers already are so scarce that women with an unintended pregnancy face a choice between reluctantly bearing a child or traveling hundreds of miles for an abortion. Election results could reduce access even further in some states.
